Now
the largest sail training assocation in the world, the
American Sail Training Assocation was founded in 1973.
As a member of Sail Training International, the ASTA works
to further the hands-on training of young sailors around
the world.
Though
it began with only a small fleet in New England waters,
the American Sail Training Assocation now over 250 tall
ships from around the world.
Each
year, the ASTA stages a Tall Ships Challenge, exposing
the public to the world of sailing and sail boats while
providing a valuable experience for the sail trainee crews.
Sail
training is a comprehensive education in the life of sailing,
teaching the trainees not only how to sail, but how to
work as part of a successful crew as well. The use of specialized
tall ships gives sail trainees the perfect situation to
further their knowledge of the seas and prepares them for
maritime careers.
